He successively studied the postgraduate and doctoral programs in Fuwai Cardiovascular Hospital Affiliated to Peking Union Medical College (currently known as National Heart Center) from 2001 to 2006. Upon graduation from the doctoral program in 2006, he began to work in the Department of Cardiology of the Tenth People's Hospital of Tongji University. Currently, he has completed more than 5,000 cardiac intervention operations. He is good at the catheter ablation for tachyarrhythmia and permanent pacing for chronic arrhythmia with rich experience in the clinical treatment and catheter ablation for arrhythmia such as supraventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, atrial premature beats and ventricular premature beats. He was the first to publish the treatment strategy for the high-risk atrial fibrillation in apoplexy with CARTOMERGE and OVERLAY technology, combined catheter ablation and left atrial appendage occlusion in China.
He published 25 treatises on core domestic journals (six as the first author); published 18 SCI theses (eight as the first author); and participated in the edition of 11 treatises. He presided over one National Natural Science Foundation of China, and participated in three National Natural Science Foundations of China. He once obtained the Medical Science and Technology Award of Shanghai City twice, Scientific and Technological Progress Award of Shanghai City twice and was honored as "Shanghai Young Pacesetter of Science and Technology".

After the post-doctoral research in University of Oxford, he began to engage in scientific research as a professor and material scientist in National Institute for Material Science, University of Wollongong in Australia and Tianjin University. At the beginning of 2003, he returned to China from Australia, and joined Shanghai MicroPort (Group) Co., Ltd. (Hong Kong-listed company, stock code 00853) as one of the first leading talents of Shanghai City. He is a member of the core entrepreneurship team of Shanghai MicroPort. He successively assumed the Director, VP and Senior VP of Shanghai MicroPort R&D Center, and the General Manager of Shanghai MicroPort Orthopedics Co., Ltd., and led the establishment of three businesses, i.e. orthopedics, rhythm management and cardiac electrophysiology subordinate to Shanghai MicroPort. He won the highest national awards-National Invention Prize and National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology twice, and obtained more than 30 items of Chinese and international patent licensing. In 2014, he founded the Sunland Fund as the founding and managing partner. The company's scale of fund management amounts to RMB1.5 billion, and it has successfully invested in famous medical treatment projects such as LungHealth, GKH, Changzhou Surgray, GeneTech, Panda Medical and Upper Bio-tech Pharma. He has rich experience in the whole-process management including founding of professional medical fund, fundraising, team establishment, investment and post-investment management. KAI MEDTECH INC has won a total of USD 17 million in the Pre-A round and A round investment from reputable investment institutions.
From 2017 to 2019, Mr. Liu An co-founded Hua Medtech Medical Devices (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. with A round financing of USD 15 million, obtained the agency right and CFDA registration certificate for the sales of Penumbra products in China, and successfully launched the marketing and sales of such products in Chinese market.
Mr. Liu An was appointed as the general manager of NAMSA Asia Pacific region from 2012 to 2017. At present, NAMSA is the world's largest one-stop industrial service platform for safety and effectiveness testing, research and development, pre-clinical study, clinical trials and regulatory consultation of professional medical devices.
